Saddlebrook Solar (SDL1) is a 81 MW solar generator located southeast of the intersection of Highway 2A and Township Road 200, near Aldersyde, Alberta. This is phase one of a two-phase project. The second phase will install 40MWh of battery storage which can provide 6.5MW of power to the grid. Saddlebrook Solar is owned by TC Energy Corporation.

This asset uses bifacial solar panels which expose both the front and back side of the solar cells. This should improve the performance of panels by capturing solar radiation that is reflected off the ground. A interesting scenario is in the winter when snow covers the ground and the top side of the panels, solar radiation that reflects off of the ground can hit the back side of the panels and would be a significant improvement over traditional panels. We look forward to seeing the relative generation performance of this asset compared to other solar generators during the winter.
